Winterhalder & Hofmeier Uhrenfabrik, Neustadt-Schwarzenbach Nickolaus Winterhalder (1710-1743) clockmaker-cottage industry. Thomas Winterhalder established the factory in Friedenweiler. Son's Mathaus, Thomas and Karl joined the fathers enterprise. Anton Hofmeier joined them and satellite shops between Neustadt and Schwarzenbach which produced clocks of premier quality. The entire Winterhalder family was involved in clocks. Hans Winterhalder founded HAWINA (however this trade mark was not registered until 1925), clock company for world wide exports and had 800 employee in Germany, England and Russia around 1908. The company fell on hard times and was purchased by the Junghans Brothers enterprise. With the crash of the New York Stock Exchange, Winterhalder enterprise lost all their assets. Political deposition of Germany in 1933 precluded this religious family from obtaining credit and after 200 years of producing clocks all portions of the business closed. The family made all kinds of clocks including grandfather clocks. One family member Clemens migrated to the United States and started another clock enterprise in Philadelphia, but it failed. Clemens Winterhalder continued to live in the Phila. area until 1976. Anton Winterhalder was manager of Howard Miller Clock Co. before he retired in New Zealand, Michigan.
