The Thiel Brothers Germany Siegmund Thiel started out in 1862 with a modest tobacco pipe factory along with his sons, Christian and George. As a side line they ran a small brass hardware store and in 1878 produced an inexpensive pocket watch that was 12 hour windup. In 1901 they incorporated and began designing and constructing machinery. The company survived WW I and the great depression through aggressive world marketing and sacrifices by all the workers. Sometime around 1905 the Thiel's became associated with the Gebruder family. Thiel clocks and watches became a household word. The company was drafted in the military production program of the "Third Reich" economy system. After WW II the company changed to VEB (people owned) corporation of GDR (German Democratic Republic).
