The first family of Hanover clockmakers was Christian Grove, his son Jacob and perhaps a grandson William. Christian appears on the tax rolls from 1777 through 1780. He may have arrived in Hanover earlier, but no earlier reference can be found. He also appears on the 1790 census among names of Hanover residents. He lived on York Street (lot 85) in Hanover. In the April 6, 1791 an issue of the Pa. Herald & York Gen Adv. is an notice of the impending sale of this property including a stove, clock and case and clockmaker's tools. The York County Common Please Docket for June 8, 1791, reports the property sold to Jacob Grove for 100 pounds on write of the County Treasurer. Christian moved to Abbottstown, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and is described as a clockmaker in the 1795 and 1804 tax rolls, but is not charged an occupational tax at any time during his residence in Abbottstown. He appears to have lived there in relative poverty until 1804 when his name was removed from the tax rolls. A few of his signed clocks have been seen. Jacob Grove appears first on the Hanover tax rolls as unmarried in 1789 and as a married clockmaker from 1792 at least through 1795 when he disappears for the rolls. Although he may have acquired his father's clockmaker tools, no clocks have been cataloged for him.
