James - Jones Elliott, 156 Cheapside, London. Apprentice to Bateman 82 St. John St., Smithfield - London to learn clockmaking. In 1882, Elliott established as manufactory of fine quality clock. Weight driven movements with chiming on tubes. Elliot sen. bought a partnership with Jeweller Walden, Brompton Rd., London. James Elliot died 1904, Frank took over the enterprise which enjoyed a considerable trade with the United States. In the year 1909 a merger with Grimshaw Baxter took place and the factory moved 1911 to Gary's Inn Lane, London. The later location was changed to larger premises in St. Anns Road, Tottenham, London was made in 1917 but this association was short lived and Frank Elliott dissolved the partnership and joined the well know firm of bell founders and clockmakers, Gillett & Johnston Ltd. in Croydon. Two years later the small clock factory was under the name of F.W. Elliot in 1923 and he was joined by his sons, Leonard and Horace Elliott, both of whom had previously served their apprenticeship in the trade. A third son Ronald, joined the firm 1929. At the outbreak of war 1939, production was switched to clocks for the armed forces and also test gear and apparatus for use with the Rolls Royce engines in RAF aircraft. In 1943 the factory was hit by bomb raids, but production was unaffected. In 1944 Frank Elliott died and left the business to his sons. With two generation behind them the firm had made sound progress, making every component of the clocks in house. In 1965 Horace Elliott became Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmaker, one of London's ancient Company founded in 1631. Horace Elliot joined a long line of old English Clockmaker who had previously held this office. It was fitting that such honor be received exactly 100 years after his grandfather, James Elliott founder of the company. started his apprenticeship. Note the name Elliott's spelling the last "t" was dropped somewhere along the way.
