Ansonia Watches: The Ansonia Watch Co. was owned by the Ansonia Clock Company in Ansonia, Connecticut. Ansonia started making clocks in about 1850 and began manufacturing watches in 1896. In 1879 the company because of several fires moved the whole operation to Brooklyn, New York. They produced about 10 million watches, all of the dollar-type timepieces. The company was sold to a Russian investor in 1930 again because of severe fires. "Patented April 17, 1888," is on the back plate of some Ansonia Watches. There are two explanation as to how the name "dollar watch" came to be. The first was that the watch was about the size of a dollar and the second was that the watch could be bought for a $1.00 or sometimes less. A dollar watch is a very inexpensively made watch. The case is a very thin base metal and all the part of most dollar watches are made of very thin metal. There are no jewels and dials were made of paper or metal. They were mostly pendant wind and pendant set with snap on bezels and backs. They were not very good time keepers but gave the poor folk an good sense of time. Copyright: Cookesy Price Guide, 15 ed.
